Employees from the 14 countries where the company operates participated in a webinar on SVTI’s experience controlling truck idling and SAAM Towage Colombia’s carbon neutrality efforts.
Santiago, June 24, 2022 | As part of Environment Month activities, SAAM organized the webinar “Environmental Best Practices” to teach the company’s entire team about projects that have led to tangible changes in the organization to reduce the environmental impacts of its operations.
“We believe that the best way to make progress on sustainability is to share positive experiences that can be replicated across divisions or can serve as inspiration for new projects in the 14 countries where we operate. That way, we can move forward on our strategy, which aims, among other objectives, to develop a deep-rooted environmental culture that addresses climate action with commitment from all employees,” confirmed SAAM’s Corporate Sustainability and Communications Officer, Cristina Schmidt.
At the event, attendees learned about the Giro Limpio project at San Vicente Terminal Internacional (SVTI), the first port in Chile to take on the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by cutting idle fuel consumption.
Carolina Parra from the Energy Sustainability Agency (AgenciaSE), who advised on this project and presented at the webinar, highlighted that “this type of initiative is key to promoting energy efficiency in the sector. This project marks a key milestone in idling management policy for Chilean ports.” The professional described the main objectives of the Giro Limpio program, its value offering and the advances it has made. She also touched on the methodology and outcomes of the project “Managing Idling at SVTI,” in the framework of the new category of partners know as “Giro Limpio port logistics operators,” which will also be implemented at Iquique Terminal Internacional and San Antonio Terminal Internacional.
In other matters, SAAM Towage Colombia presented on its experience with PAS 2060 carbon neutrality certification and ISO 14061-1 assurance of its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. The process consisted of Bureau Veritas verifying that the company had correctly measured and offset 100% of the GHG emissions generated in 2020 at all maritime towage operations in Cartagena Bay, including all services provided for the Ecopetrol Group. These emissions totaled 3,930 tons of CO2e.
