Sustainability

SAAM Towage Chile began integrating its management systems based on the ISM Code in 2017. To do this, it first defined an Integrated Management Policy and then focused on environmental compliance aspects, specifically standardization of hazardous waste management and waste sorting.

In 2017, the company joined the Environment Ministry’s Huella Chile program, making it the first towage company in Chile to earn the quantification seal for its carbon footprint. This seal has been consecutively achieved for the years 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. We will reapply this year for the 2021 seal.

In 2020, it became the first towage company in Chile to achieve the Carbon Footprint Reduction Seal, cutting its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by nearly 12%, equivalent to the removal of 4,235 tons of CO2 equivalents (Ton Co2 eq). This was achieved by slowing vessel speeds when free sailing and utilizing shore supply during stays in port. This also helps reduce noise and vibrational exposure on-board created by generator motors, thus improving crew comfort.

Starting in 2022, we will begin quantifying our water footprint, a new measure that contributes to the overall sustainability of our operations.
